Dear ,
Summer is the best time to be in New York!
Despite the heat produced by its overcrowded black streets and tall mirrored buildings.
My hometown offers a diverse array of outdoor activities across its 5 boroughs.
And, even better, many of them are free.
Last week I got out from behind my computer to sample 2 free theater offerings.
Behind the main branch of the New York Public Library in midtown, Broadway In Bryant Park showcased a medley of performances with the actors from current Broadway muscials. One of the treasures of New York, live Broadway performances instill you with emotion.
Despite being the heart of professional US theater, the price of a Broadway ticket is out of reach for many pocketbooks! So it was no wonder that eager attendees arrived early to stake out their space despite the heat.
Unlike the other musical numbers, the actors from the long-running musical, Stomp, used no words or instrumental accompaniment.
Instead they used their tap shoes and props to create music and drama. Their props included wooden brooms, plastic garbage cans and other items you could find in any hardware store.
The result:
The lack of words forced the audience to be quiet and pay focused attention to the Stomp pieces.
Marketing Lesson:
Change content pacing, visuals and audio to attract and hold audience attending.
Actionable Markting Tips To Apply To You Can Use:
-
Reimagine your content to appear in different contexts. This translates to other content formats and media platforms. Remember your content distribution goal is to keep your content visible and to expand it to new audiences. For example, I now want to get tickets for Stomp.
-
Support the community where your business is located. This one hour show entertained people who worked nearby, New Yorkers and tourists.
On Friday, my husband and I headed to Brooklyn to see Antigone in Ferguson
at St. Ann and The Holy Trinity Church. Combining dramatic reading with a gospel choir, this production was inspired by Michael Brown’s 2014 tragic death in Ferguson, Missouri.
Members of the cast and chorus consisted of mixed races, beliefs and views. They changed during the 50 performance run. On Friday, NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams played Haemon and 2019 LaGuardia High School graduate Diamond Jone was Antigone. And several
members of the chorus could have sung in any top music venue in the city. (Click on the image below to see a video of the Gospel jam at the end of the show.)
The performance included an open panel and audience discussion about violence and social justice. A social worker from Ferguson facilitated the conversation that focused on how to change perspectives within each community.
Mothers of the Movement, a group of African-American women whose sons died due to gun violence, attended Friday’s performance. Like Antigone, these women feel the need to right civil wrongs.
Actionable Markting Tips To Apply To You Can Use:
-
Use the power of time-tested story lines to frame your content. Presented in contemporary English without costumes, Antigone didn’t literally represent the Ferguson incident. Rather the producer let the audience make their own conclusions.
-
Provide space for your audience to engage. Expand your focus beyond your business needs. For example, the Brooklyn Public Library supported Antigone In Ferguson because they viewed their mission as evolving to support experiences and community.
