Dear ,
Happy Summer Solstice! (It was Friday, June 21st.)
In the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the longest day of the year.
Since the Sun is at its peak strength, the summer solstice is at the heart of many cultural traditions. For example Stonehenge traditions date back 5,000 years.
To celebrate in New York, people head to Coney Island for the Mermaid Parade. The event features a King Neptune and a Queen Mermaid.
Started in 1983 by Dick D. Zigrun, the Mermaid Parade honors self expression and Coney Island. Thousands of marchers and spectators wear mermaid-inspired costumes. For perspective, the parade attracts as many people as a city the size
of Boston!
Celebrating one beach over from Coney Island, my attire lacked sea-inspired imagination. But since I brought my Summer spirit, my mermaid friends happily posed with me!
Actionable Marketing Lesson:
Key to Success:
Focus on higher level goals that help improve and support your community!
Along with the summer solstice, the last week of June signals the final push for pre-summer marketing work.
Translation:
Check that your marketing has shed its winter look and is ready for Summer fun.
While you’re at it, schedule these marketing activities:
-
Branding
-
Content creation including blog posts
-
Social media shares and content
-
Communications including email newsletters
-
Advertising
Your objective:
Keep your brand visible and contextually relevant regardless of your team's vacation schedules.
Note: this doesn't mean that you can
leave your marketing on autopilot!
At a minimum, monitor what’s being said about your brand and your competitors on social media and elsewhere so you can respond in a timely manner.
Actionable Marketing Tips:
-
Put on your brand’s summer clothes. Even if you market B2B products, change the context of your offering. For example with Matt Monath’s help, here’s how I summerized my Twitter profile.
-
Update and republish your summer content, especially the 5 types of
information customers actively seek. My colleague Marcus Sheridan calls it “They Ask, You Answer” information.
-
Serve ice cream type content and social media shares. Jason Miller calls this “Chocolate Cake Content”.
So What Can You Do To Feel Happier This Summer?
As an AMG newsletter reader, you’re already a very smart cookie.
But we all know that we can up our game. So here’s what you can do to get the most out this fleeting 8 week period and feel happier with yourself and those that matter to you.
Since summer’s high energy only lasts 8 fleeting weeks, follow these 3 steps to increase your sense of achievement and happiness:
-
Assess what you did during the first half of 2019. Keep it simple. Remember it takes about 2 months to establish a habit.
-
What were your goals? Did you start them, do anything towards achieving them or complete them?
-
What did you not do that is important to you based on the last 6 months? Erik Qualman recommends having a “Don’t Do List”.
-
Decide on 1 or 2 things or projects you want to achieve this summer that involve what Cal Newport calls “Deep Work”. To qualify, they must be well defined so that you
can break the work into easy-to-accomplish assignments. This way you can track your progress over the summer. Whether it’s business or personal, schedule dedicated time each day to work on these projects.
-
Expand your network. Summer is the best time to get out and see people. Work schedules are more relaxed and bosses are on vacation. Also, you may be traveling more. Set
yourself a goal of meeting at least one new person per week. I’m going to push you to 10!
