Dear ,
Like movies viewed on the big screen in a theater,
the Academy Awards® are larger than life.
So it's no surprise:
Focused on the top movie stars, the Academy Awards reach the biggest audience of any TV broadcast award show.
But there’s a catch, at least if you want an Oscar®:
The movie must NOT be released in a non-theatrical format before being released in LA movie theaters for at least 7 consecutive days.
After that you can use your television or other connected device to download and watch it when and where your schedule allows you.
Even better, multiple distribution and viewing options benefit both viewers
and producers.
Although this year, Netflix has caused a stir with its movie Roma. Netflix spent $15 billion on content creation
last year and $25+ million to promote Roma for award contention according to Bloomberg. This resulted in awards for Best Cinematography, Best Foreign Film and Best Director.
Variety stated the challenge Netflix poses for the Entertainment industry as follows:
"Netflix has also rewritten the rules of TV and movie dealmaking, talent paydays, TV scheduling, film release windows and marketing campaigns. It’s an extraordinary level of influence exerted on a mature industry dominated by long-established stalwarts."
Before you think that this doesn’t matter to marketers, take a look at the Entertainment market. In addition to Netflix’s DTC (or direct-to-consumer) control, don’t underestimate FAANG.
Unfortunately the Academy Awards Show hasn’t be so lucky:
-
No Master of Ceremonies. Due to problems and fails of past MCs, no one wants the job. That said, a well known personality builds awareness for your show.
Marketing Takeaway: Know what you’re going to say and practice it. You only get one chance to make a great first
impression.
-
Boring Speeches. Maybe actors don’t know how to use their own words. With a 1 in 5 chance of winning, you think they would write something in advance.
Here are 3 Actionable Marketing Lessons you can learn from Oscar:
-
Put your hat in the ring for awards in your category or specialty. For most business awards, there’s often a fee. Don’t be short-sighted since it can get you into the spotlight and
raise your visibility. Like the Oscars, it can help your bottom line.
BTW, if you’ve got a great content marketing campaign, consider entering the Content Marketing Awards. (Early bird deadline is March 8, 2019 (not an affiliate link!)
-
Create your own awards. Take a page from Top Rank’s Lee Odden. Odden spotlights top people in the marketing field in a number of ways. For example, for 5 years, Top Rank spotlighted 25 Women Who Rock Social Media. (Note: I made the list in 2014!) Even better, they gave winners a badge of honor to place on their blogs.
-
Develop related content. Become the Joan Rivers of an awards event you’re attending! Use the opportunity to talk to influencers, presenters and attendees. To do this well, plan how you’re going to create
content. For example, Contently’s Joe Lazauskas interviewed marketers at the Cannes Festival.
Beyond awards ceremonies, what other types of events do you attend and what are your goals for being there in person?
Also in case you haven’t heard about #BeLikeableDay. Dave Kerpen and his agency Likeable Media started it and Tuesday, February 25th is the day!
