Dear ,
Last Friday marked International Women’s Day!
As marketers, we can learn from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (AKA: Notorious RBG!)
Why?
Because this powerhouse of a woman who turns 85 this week keeps showing us how to live our lives no matter what life throws at her!
Ginsburg used her smarts to change how the law treats women in the US.
As a lawyer, Ginsburg carefully chose her battles. She fought cases that moved her agenda for equal justice for women.
More importantly, Ginsburg followed my mother’s 3 guidelines for women. They can help you even if you’re not female!
-
Take care of your body because the body that you have at 20, 30 and 40 is the body you have at 50, 60 and beyond. Ginsburg works out 3 times a week with a trainer.
-
Watch out for your own finances because you can’t depend on a husband, partner, or boyfriend. In an era where many households depended on a man’s income, Ginsburg was often the main breadwinner.
-
Have a passion (beyond your relationship with your spouse, partner or other person. Ginsburg loves the opera, a passion that she shared with her ideologically opposed peer Antonin Scalia.
But Ginsberg added another important point to my mother’s list:
Develop and maintain strong friendships.
The Harvard Study of Adult Development confirms the value of quality relationships. This ongoing analysis followed over 700 men since they were
teenagers in 1938. Of the original group, 60 of the original respondents are still alive and in their 90s.
Regardless of background or social class, the study found:
-
Socially connected people live healthier and longer. By contrast, loneliness can be toxic.
-
The quality of your personal relationships matters. Even when faced with physical pain, you remain happy.
-
Good relationships protect your brain. It reduces memory loss.
The goods news:
You can develop new relationships at any age.
Face-to-face connections and community matter!
What does this mean for your marketing career success?
Figure out what you need to do next to make progress along the way while you keep your eye on your long term goals.
When it comes to your career, you control your destiny. While you may need to take a lower level job to make ends meet, you must still aim for better and more challenging work.
Given the latest employment reports in the US, expect job opportunities to continue to diminish in the short term. But remember even bad markets don’t last forever!
