Dear ,
Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 6th is Election Day in the U.S. where the
midterm elections have attracted lots of attention and momentum. Regardless of your politics, race, religion, sexual orientation, or age, your vote matters!
Show up because you not only have a right but also a responsibility to make your voice heard.
Please stick with me since this letter isn’t a political
message.
In New York, companies have used the election as a marketing promotion hook. For example: - Lyft decorated a mural on New York’s Lower East Side to promote their 50% off rides to take voters to the polls. In 2016, roughly 15 million people who were registered to vote didn’t because they lacked
transportation according to AdWeek. (Photo via AdWeek)
- Fishs Eddy, a housewares store, carries politically inspired products including a mug supporting Teddy Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party. Even better, they posted a bulletin board asking
shoppers to express their opinions.
Elections and voting have a lot in common with marketing. I learned this studying survey research at NORC while a student at the University of Chicago.
Don’t take my word for it—Ask Jay Baer. Before becoming a marketing superstar, Baer worked on John McCain’s political campaigns.
Like politicians in elections, marketers face
similar challenges.
Most importantly, trust has eroded. 56% of survey respondents had lost trust in government politicians according to Edelman’s 2018 Trust Barometer research.

response.
Actionable Marketing Tips: - Make your audience feel different as a result of your content, communications and other marketing messages. This includes your social media postings and face-to-face
interactions.
- Adapt your message and presentation based on its distribution context. Beyond your words, where and how your message is presented influences whether readers pay attention and take action.
- Use inclusive
language. Build relationships with your audience.
Further, guide your audience to act! Don’t assume that they know the
next step to take.
Always include a contextually relevant call-to-action!
Even better, spotlight your call-to-action using design elements that standout.
