Dear ,
Greetings from New York! Summer considered slinking out with an overcast, rainy Labor Day weekend but fortunately the sun decided to poke through. Even if we didn't get out of the city over the long Labor Day weekend, there’s a tangible feeling of freedom here. The city felt noticeably less crowded as many companies closed early and people took an extra day or two to extend their long weekend. But the signs
of back-to-school are evident especially in the shopping districts where parents and children carry bags stuffed with clothes and school supplies. Along with 4,000 other content marketing aficionados, I’m off to Cleveland to share, learn and have fun with my marketing friends and soon-to-be friends. But as with any conference, often the most memorable connections happen by serendipity, whether it’s at one of the happy hours, in the exhibit hall or in Starbucks. Because during unrehearsed moments, you meet people as people. You get to know each other beyond just being a photo in someone’s stream. I get that if you’re shy you think this is a BIG challenge. You may not
realize this but I was extremely shy back in high school. But my dad taught me how to overcome it. The night before he left me off at college he told me not to worry if I saw a group of people talking. In his opinion, the chances were high they already knew each other. He pushed me further by saying, “If you go up to them and start a conversation, they’ll think you are
confident.” Dad's pep talk worked and I overcame my shyness. You can use my 30 or 3 rule (It really works. It's how I met my husband): If I go somewhere new and don’t know anyone, I make a deal with myself to go up and talk to at least 3 new people or stay 30 minutes. Even if you’re introverted, make the effort. I
guarantee you that the results will be worth it! RECOMMENDED READING: Whether you’re attending Content Marketing World or not, here’s how to use conferences to create amazing content.
