Dear ,
Sending a happy Thanksgiving Day to my Canadian readers and a happy
Columbus Day to my American readers. Last week I spent 3 days at Heroic Public Speaking Live (aka: HPS) working on honing my presentation skills in the middle of Philadelphia’s theater district. While soaking up as much information as my brain could handle, I was delighted to reconnect with my marketing colleagues Andrew Davis (pictured), Ron Tite, Neen James, Stephan Spencer, Kathy Klotz-Guest, and Katie Lance! (Hat tip to sponsor AWeber, my email provider.) As professionally trained actors, Michael and Amy Port apply their performance craft to public speaking, elevating it to an art form. In the process, they combine the delivery of information, stories and showmanship. Their background enables them to enrich the speaker’s skill set beyond the pedestrian slide deck talk to deliver a winning performance. The Ports truly appreciate both the power and constraints of
live performance. In addition to being ready to start when the curtain goes up and ending on time, you must be prepared to handle whatever happens while you’re on stage. Even if it’s a text from FEMA! Want to improve your speaking skills, even if it’s just to persuade your boss to approve your marketing budget? In addition to teaching speakers a framework for
creating stellar presentation, the Ports not only encourage speakers to take big risks but also to select the criticism that they need to improve their craft. This year I realized the power of asking for the feedback you need. Doing this allows you to reframe how you work with managers, peers and
others. Like any great conference or event, Michael and Amy Port have created something special that’s more than the sum of the parts, namely a community. Yes--I’ve said this about other great conferences! That’s why I invest in attending conferences. For attendees, the best part of being together at a live conference is building real life relationships. As a result, you
really know people in a way that’s deeper than social media swipes. Relationships enrich your life. So use the Ports’ words to up your marketing and improve your life. - Try new things
- Make big choices
- Crush your fears
