actionable marketing guide

Dear ,

While New York City’s weather can’t figured out if it’s ready for summer, there’s a flurry of live marketing activities, here and elsewhere.

As I’ve mentioned before, you have to get out from behind your computer to engage with your prospects and customers as well as to build relationships with fellow marketers.

I get it can be difficult to tear yourself away from your work since the pile never seems to go down. (Also like Ann Handley I was an extremely shy child.)

But I have a little secret for you.

Get closer and I’ll whisper it in your ear.

Whether you admit it to yourself or not, it’s scary to get up and get out of your comfort zone.

  • What if you don’t know anyone?
  • What if they don’t like your company?
  • Or even worse, what they don’t like you?

The reality is everyone else has these concerns. Some are more quiet about them than others. While others have more experience dealing with crowds and strangers.

But at some point everyone has to learn to get out and meet people.

You can do it!

While you’re out, your mind works on your latest projects so you return refreshed and able to do more in less time.  Even better, you don’t feel punished for not finishing your work.

No one ever said sitting at your computer for 12+ hours was good for your health or your work output.

Since I live in New York City, a place many people visit or hold events, I can pop over and grab a coffee or adult beverage with colleagues who are in town. For example, last week, I attended ContentSEO New York hosted by BuzzSumo and Majestic SEO. I caught up with my colleagues Lee Odden, Steve Rayson and Susan Moeller.  I also met SEO experts Ann Smarty and Dixon Jones as well as BuzzSumo founder Henley Wing at the event.

Even better I learned about Memes from CondeNast’s Valerie De La Rosa. Her presentation was a knockout that got me thinking differently about getting attention.

But here’s the reality:

  • You don’t need an organized event like ContentSEO to tap into being away.

PR metrics expert, Katie Paine, used a speaking engagement in Maryland to reach out to people on her email list.

Her subject line, “I’ll be in your area soon, want to schedule something?” got me to open the email. (For those of you who don’t know US geography, Maryland is at least a 4 hour car ride from Manhattan. It’s not my area!)

Paine softly promoted the PRSA event and explained that she had set up time to meet with colleagues, clients and prospects.

She’s not the only one who does this.

Peter Shankman often tweets or emails when he’s out-of-town and has free time. Shankman’s motto: “Always take the meeting!”  (BTW, he’s gets new clients that others pass up because they don’t go outside their comfort zone.)

You can reach out to friends, colleagues and others even if you’re staying in town. Use the change of weather or finishing a big project.

Just get out and connect face-to-face.

Now’s the best time of year to reach out and network.

Why?

Because as the weather improves (at least in the northern hemisphere) everyone wants an excuse to get out of their office! Even better, once everyone starts taking vacations, those working employees feel freer to take a break and meet for coffee or lunch.

Go on—send out 5 email invitations to connect.

Talking about connecting, please consider joining me at Content Marketing World 2017.
