Dear , Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers among you! You deserve to celebrate and be celebrated! No matter how old you get, your mom is and always will be a very special person. While I was a picky eater when I was young, I was very fortunate my mom was a great cook. Every dish she made my father and grandfather proclaimed: “Delicious!” Her spacious kitchen contained a library of cookbooks. Pick one up and it fell open to her favorite, food stained recipes. My mom learned of some of the recipes she was best known for from her mother. My grandmother cooked without a measuring cup. She tossed in a few handfuls of flour, a pinch of salt and so on. To capture my grandmother’s recipes, my mother stood at her side and measured each new ingredient before it was added to the bowl. My mother codified her mother’s recipes to produce consistent dishes. Unlike many cooks who omit a key ingredient to prevent imitation my mom openly shared her recipes. It was her legacy to the people she loved. She wanted them to succeed. Today, we still use many of my mom’s time-tested recipes. I’ve applied my mother’s open-source approach to show my community and students how to develop quality content consistently. Like cooking, strong writing skills require on-going practice, specifically, showing up at the computer or paper and putting down word after word. Instead of cutting away the unnecessary parts early in the process you need to let your first draft marinate. Then ruthlessly cut every excess word. Then let it sit before you read it again to ensure it conveys your message. Just as every mother modifies recipes to her family’s tastes and traditions you must develop your writing style. It’s known as voice and you must learn to wrap your words in your own. Want some writing help? Here’s inspiration: |
