actionable marketing guide

Dear ,

I can’t believe this week is Social Media Marketing World 2017.

Do you ever feel that way about something you’ve been looking forward to?

You have to pinch yourself since you can’t quite believe that the event has actually arrived.

Of all the conferences I attend, Social Media Marketing World is one of my favorites.

It’s not just that social media marketing is a topic that’s near and dear to my heart, but also that the event takes place in San Diego. Need I say more?

The weather is always beautiful and the people are always friendly.

Beyond that, the Social Media Examiner team work hard to ensure that everyone has a great time. No detail is too small (and they sweat all of them!)

It’s a lesson in how to run a live event. Everything has a contingency plan.Unlike many other conferences where planners change things up every year, Mike Stelzner and his team play many of the crowd pleasers.

SMW 20107Join me at Social Media Marketing World 2017—the mega-conference designed to inspire and empower you—by Social Media Examiner.

Discover the best and newest ways to market your business on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest and Snapchat. The event takes place March 22-24, 2017, in San Diego.

If you can't make it, consider getting a virtual ticket.

Take a page from Razor Social’s Ian Cleary. He spends most of his time networking. He skips the private parties and heads to the main events. Further, he’s often found chatting with the who’s who of social media.

If you’re going to Social Media Marketing World, at a minimum, plan your schedule on your trip there. Have a list of the sessions you want to see and people you’d like to meet.

As part of your conference plan, don’t forget to create conference related content.

While many of the presenters are there to network, don’t keep trying to push your agenda or get them to listen to you for more than a few minutes.

Whether you’re attending SMMW17 or not, take the time to brush up your elevator speech. Specifically, what do you want strangers to remember about you when they meet you? How can you make it memorable?

This applies to everyone you meet. Never underestimate the value of positioning yourself before others do it for you.

Before you tell me that you’re not a business and you don’t need branding, take a deep breath.

Take out your smartphone and check how you appear to others around you with a photo or a mirror app.

Not sure what you should say?

Ask a few colleagues you trust for their input.

Put their feedback down on paper and let it sit a couple of days. You need to be willing to accept their responses.

Then go through it and see how it matches up with your perspective. Are there aspects you don’t like? Do you feel stuck in the past?

You have the opportunity to recreate your elevator pitch and hone it to fit the person you want to present yourself as. Like your LinkedIn profile it should be forward looking.

If you’re going to be at Social Media Marketing World, please come up and introduce yourself. I’m always happy to meet my readers.

Happy Marketing
Heidi.

Known book coverQ: What’s your best piece of advice for readers looking to improve their marketing?

Once you’ve set up your website, your next—and most important task—is to start building your opt-in email list. Email marketing is the digital backbone to all your marketing.

Too many businesses get seduced by social media. Not that tools like Facebook and SnapChat can’t be important marketing channels, but it’s difficult to drive traffic and sales from those channels unless you’re willing to spend money. Social media is great for networking and building trust, but if you want to make sales and grow your business, build your email list with qualified prospects and customers.

A great quote comes from Bryan Eisenberg: Social is for reach, but email is for revenue.
